The most common substances used in computer battery packs are nickel cadmium (Nicad), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), and Lithium Ion. A new type of battery, called a smart battery, provides the computer with information about its power status so that the computer can conserve power intelligently. With a normal battery, the computer makes estimates about the battery's condition that are not always correct.
