A bootable CD-ROM format specification that allows a
computer to
boot from a
CD-ROM. El Torito was proposed by
IBM and
Phoenix Technologies. It is an extension to the
ISO 9660 CD-ROM specification.
Overview: The ISO 9660 File System This article describes the ISO 9660 file system format used on compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM). CD-ROMs have become so popular (and cheap) that its market share grew exponential over the last years.
El Torito Specification - January 1995 (PDF) This specification defines how makers of CD-ROMs can package several "images" of floppy and hard disks on a single CD with the ability to catalog these images and to selectively boot from any single image.
