Split Multi-Link Trunking
Last modified: Friday, May 12, 2006

Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) is an improvement over Multi-Link Trunking (MLT), a method of link aggregation that allows multiple Ethernet links to be aggregated together, and handled as a single logical trunk. SMLT is the splitting of member links in a normal MLT trunk from an end device across two devices. These devices synchronize state across an Inter-Switch Link (IST) such that they appear to the connecting device to be a single device (switch block) and prevent any packet duplication. SMLT provides enhanced resiliency with sub-second failover while operating transparently to end-devices.

Split Multi-link Trunking (SMLT)
This document describes Split Multi-link Trunking (SMLT) for bridged and routed networks. SMLT enables topologies with upstream node redundancy for increased reliability of Layer 2 link aggregation subnetworks based on [IEEE 802.3ad] and router redundancy based on VRRP [RFC 2338].

Nortel Networks - Eliminate Single Points of Failure (PDF)
Minimizing down time during scheduled network maintenance, such as system upgrades or configuration changes, is also a key requirement of today’s networks. Providing network operators with tools that allow them to apply network changes during working hours, rather than after hours, can lead to significant cost savings over time. The SMLT/RSMLT solution provides a simple way of upgrading aggregation/core devices without impacting overall network availability.
