Zuse, Konrad 1910(b.)-1995(d.) German engineer who in 1935 built the world's first binary digit computer, the Z1, which was destroyed in World War II. In 1941, he built the first fully operational program-controlled electromechanical binary calculating machine, or digital computer, called the Z3. In 1945, he began work on "Plankalkul," the first algorithmic programming language that he used to design a chess-playing program.
